How Does eSIM Work?

Understand the technology behind eSIM — from carrier profiles to remote provisioning.

The Technology

eSIM uses a technology called Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP). When you activate an eSIM, a carrier profile is downloaded over the internet and installed on the embedded chip in your device.

Activation Process

You receive a QR code containing your carrier profile. When you scan it, your phone downloads the profile from the carrier's server and installs it. The process takes less than a minute.

Multiple Profiles

Modern devices can store multiple eSIM profiles (up to 8 on newer iPhones). You can switch between profiles without deleting them, making it easy to have plans for different countries.

Security

eSIM is more secure than physical SIM. It can't be removed and stolen, profiles are encrypted, and remote provisioning uses secure channels. If your phone is lost, the eSIM can be remotely deactivated.
